From Fragmented to Fully Optimized: An International SEO Turnaround Case Study

Showcasing International SEO Project

Semrush Site Audit dashboard showing International SEO score improved to 100 percent

Project summary

Overview

The client’s website served customers across multiple countries and languages — but under the surface, its international setup was undermining that reach rather than supporting it. A technical audit surfaced three issues that quietly hurt multi-region sites more often than site owners realize:

  • Hreflang tags that were missing or misconfigured, so search engines couldn’t consistently match the right country/language page to the right searcher — meaning visitors sometimes landed on a version meant for a completely different market.
  • Near-duplicate content across regional pages, where country and language variants overlapped closely enough to compete with each other in search rather than each earning its own visibility.
  • Inconsistent geo-targeting and indexing signals, leaving search engines unsure which page to index and serve for which region — a common byproduct of international sites growing faster than their technical foundation.

None of these problems are visible on the surface. They show up as underperformance, cannibalized rankings, and wasted crawl budget — and they only get fixed by someone specifically looking for them.

How It Was Fixed

The remediation followed a structured, audit-first process:

  1. Ran a full International SEO audit in Semrush to identify every hreflang, duplication, and geo-targeting issue on the site.
  2. Rebuilt the hreflang architecture, correctly mapping every regional and language variant to its equivalents so search engines could resolve targeting conflicts.
  3. Resolved duplicate content by differentiating regional pages so each version stood on its own instead of cannibalizing another market’s rankings.
  4. Corrected geo-targeting and indexing signals, aligning URL structure and canonical configuration so the right page reached the right audience every time.
The Outcome

Once the fixes were implemented, the site’s International SEO score in Semrush’s Site Audit climbed to a clean 100% — confirming that every major international SEO signal on the site, from hreflang to indexing, was fully resolved.

A fully optimized international foundation like this isn’t the finish line — it’s what makes everything built afterward (regional content, international link building, localized campaigns) actually perform instead of fighting technical debt behind the scenes.

The Bigger Picture

International SEO problems are easy to miss and expensive to ignore. This project is a reminder that even a site with long-standing hreflang and duplication issues can be brought to full technical health with the right audit and a methodical fix — no rebuild required.
